Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Ara Robotics?
Ara is a robotics company with a vision to bring robotic solutions into everyday life to increase organisational productivity.
Its ground-breaking product is ARI, a commercial autonomous floor maintenance robot to be used in the world’s leading facilities, including airports, warehouses, manufacturing sites, shopping malls, universities, religious spaces,
hospitals and other commercial spaces.
Founded in 2019 by two robotics engineers in Turkiye, the company today delivers the highest quality, disruptive floor maintenance devices for commercial applications.
What is the ARI floor maintenance robot?
ARI is one of the most advanced fully autonomous commercial floor maintenance robots on the market, designed entirely with domestic knowledge, resources and labour.
ARI is designed from the ground up to be of the highest quality, not a conversion from old and tired designs, with industry-leading technology and software, reliability and serviceability.
Tackling the time-consuming and tedious task of commercial floor maintenance, ARI allows your cleaning and maintenance staff to focus on other business-critical or value-added tasks, increasing the productivity of the entire team. In addition to cleaning and maintaining commercial floors, our robots also inspect and report to the FM team any issues with the integrity and safety of the floors. Optionally, using AI cameras and patented floor recognition software, we can inspect every square centimetre of commercial floors for discolouration, cracks, irregularities, pooling, levelling issues and much more. This is extremely important to ensure visitor, patient and worker safety in commercial facilities.
ARI can autonomously develop its own map in facilities up to 100000m2, use lifts to change floors, interact with other robots, including other types of foreign branded mobile devices.
ARI is also able to control, inspect and report on indoor air quality during cleaning and maintenance of floors through patented hardware/software. Indoor quality is essential to create a safe and pleasant working/visiting area in commercial facilities.
ARA Robotics ARI can clean and maintain up to 20,000 m2 per day using its fully autonomous nest for refilling, emptying and self-maintenance. This dock cleans the brushes and the robot’s subfloor, can refill with fresh (optionally hot) water, drain and recycle dirty water (up to 10 times using the patented RO recycling and disinfection system).
ARI is a set-and-forget unit that utilises state-of-the-art mechanics and electronics together when used in conjunction with the wall unit. It can create and maintain its own maps and allows FM managers/users to mould and change the daily work routine to suit their needs.
ARI is an indispensable solution for smart cities, conservation of natural resources, high level robotic autonomy, labour saving and repetitive tasks.
ARI – General Information
How does ARI maintain floors?
ARI is designed to clean hard and soft floors with a wide range of cleaning settings and configurations. Using different modules you can sweep, scrub, polish or disinfect floors and the environment.
ARI dispenses clean water and detergent solution from its 60 Lt (16 gal) tank and scrubs floors using twin cylindrical brushes or double disc brushes, depending on the model. The cleaning fluids collected by the squeegees are filtered by ARI’s cleaning system to prevent dust or sand from entering the floor and are reused as much as possible to conserve natural resources.
If the autonomous wall unit is using Petek, the dirty water is taken to a special compartment when the robot approaches and processed in a recycling unit with a reverse osmosis system and stored to be utilised for the next use. Optionally, the domestic water can be preheated in the wall unit.
For dry floor cleaning, i.e. sweeping, two cylindrical brushes rotating in opposite directions are used. The front brush beats the floor and loosens the dust and dirt, while the main brush at the back lifts them off the floor and makes them absorbable by vacuum. Thanks to ARI’s powerful vacuum system, all debris is removed from the floor and stored in the hopper.
Energy efficiency
ARI is powered by a specially manufactured LiPO rechargeable battery with a capacity of 80Ah. Charge and discharge cycles are designed completely autonomously and calibrated to keep the batteries constantly optimised.
When the robot’s charge decreases and returns to its nest, it charges only enough for the remaining task in order to save time and returns to its work. In this way, unnecessary time loss is prevented.
Similarly, by sensing the floor structure, it generates only the required amount of vacuum power, thus ensuring high energy efficiency – and at the same time environmental peace by operating with lower noise.
What is ARI’s run time between charges?
The run time varies according to the cleaning plan and settings, but is in the range of 3-4 hours depending on the module(s) used, the condition of the floor and the crowdedness of the environment. This time is around 3 hours at the highest vacuum fan power and 8 hours when only mop is used. It can reach its full charge (15% – 100%) in 2.5 hours.
How can I maximise cleaning time with ARI?
By changing the layout of the plant it is possible to achieve certain gains in cleaning time by enabling the robots to move faster and without interruption.
Does ARI monitor water tank levels?
Yes, ARI’s water tanks, although fully autonomous when used with the Petek Cradle, are equipped with sensors to alert you when it is time to fill the solution tank or empty the grey tank. Notifications on the user’s touch screen provide clear and simple instructions for the operators. The ARI also keeps track of the contamination levels in the grey tank to adjust the filtration speed during recycling.
Which floor surfaces are most suitable for ARI?
The ARI fully autonomous floor maintenance robot is designed to clean the following commercial floor surfaces:
Non-Slip Tiles
Concrete (polished, unpolished, tiles)
Epoxy
Granite
Limestone (honed)
Linoleum and Marmoleum
Marble
Durable
Stone Carpet
Terracotta
Terrazzo
Travertine
Vinyl and Vinyl Composite Tile
Low and medium pile carpets
Mushroom
Can ARI clean carpeted floors?
ARI is a fully autonomous floor care robot that uses vacuum and brushes to clean carpeted areas. ARI has a dual brush system: one of the brushes with rubber blades beats the carpet to loosen dirt, the other removes particles and pushes them through the vacuum inlet.
Can ARI clean outdoor areas?
ARI is designed for cleaning indoor commercial environments and should not be operated outdoors.
What type of floor cleaning detergent does ARI use?
ARI can use the same industry standard floor cleaning detergents commonly used in manual scrubbing machines. You should only use non-foaming or low-foaming detergents when cleaning with ARI.
What is the noise level of the ARI during operation?
The maximum environmental noise level of ARI during operation is 60 dBA.
Why is a floor maintenance robot better than a manual (ride-on or push-behind) scrubber?
While manual scrubbers have dominated commercial cleaning for many years, floor scrubbing robots are next-generation solutions delivering substantive benefits over aging technology. The ARI is not a scrubber only machine, but a complete solution for every type of commercial floor. It is a fully autonomous floor maintenance robot offers significant operational and business advantages over manual cleaning with a ride-on or push-behind scrubber.

Back to reporting, what questions can ARI help me answer?
ARI provides visibility into a part of your business that is not usually seen or subjectively assessed.
Was my facility cleaned last night?
How well was my facility cleaned?
How much time did it take?
How much floor space was actually covered?
How efficient was the cleaning operation?
How much water did I use?
What brush pressure was used?
Where exactly in the facility was (or was not) cleaned?
Are there any defects and/or problems with the floors?
ARI has sensors and measuring devices to check and record much more data about itself and the environment. Our software provides answers to these questions and more, every day, on every floor, for every cleaning operation. Reports are available for a single ARI or an entire ARI fleet, including efficiency metrics, trend reports and visual ratings for each cleaning operation. Of course, if you need a custom report depending on your request and requirements, ARA Robotics will be happy to make it happen.
What kind of environments are these robots suitable for?
To get the right efficiency from autonomous robots, you need to have large open spaces that are maintained for at least three hours a day, several days a week. Our floor maintenance robots can clean multiple routes per building and easily navigate between objects. They can do this 24/7, except for battery and cleaning consumable refill/drain times. No human is needed to start or stop the work.
Our robots cannot go up and down ramps with a slope of more than 5%, turn in aisles narrower than 100 cm, or overcome elevation differences of 40 mm or more. For this reason, you should consider your facility and the areas to be used before making a purchase decision. Ara Robotik staff will help you in this regard and make suggestions.
Can robots clean as well as human workers?
For floor maintenance, yes, even better. Just because human workers tend to have distraction on long and repetitive tasks, robots perform much better comparably.
How capable is the supplier to improve their product as technology changes?
ARA Robotics is an engineering company that exclusively designs and manufactures surface maintenance and inspection robots. Both founders are pioneers in mobile autonomous navigation and cleaning mechanics. ARA Robotics specialises exclusively in mobile autonomous floor care and develops innovative products with its entire team.
Beyond lower costs, what other benefits do cleaning robots provide?
- Time savings
- Consistent cleaning quality on repeated tasks
- Huge savings in energy and consumables
- Sustainability in natural resources
- Predefined, sustainable performance – no surprises
How soon can we put the robot into operation when it comes to the facility?
Immediately! Once ARI arrives at your site, it will be ready for use almost immediately, as Ara Robotics engineers will contact you before delivery to assess your needs. After initial mapping and site inspection, as well as installation and connections for the Honeycomb wall unit, you can start using your ARI.
Can autonomous robots work effectively in human and/or complex environments?
Yes for robots with advanced obstacle recognition and avoidance capabilities, such as ARI. The sensors, cameras and detection systems of advanced autonomous mobile robots can operate in a regular, reliable and stable manner even in very complex and even dynamic environments. ARI is able to predict the objects in front of it, adjust its route accordingly, change it or decide to stop completely.
Who will train my staff?
Ara Robotics staff will ask, review, assess your needs and design a training program for your staff. The training consists of the following items:
Brief information about robots
The logic of autonomy
The conveniences offered by robots
Introduction of the robot and its functions
Basic care
Usage details
Reporting (to relevant units)
What to do in case of possible problems
Some simple screen programming and preventive maintenance procedures will also be explained during this training. Since robots primarily take care of their own structure and operation, serious malfunctions are not expected. If the basic things to be done are fulfilled, our robots will take care of the rest.
How much setup and training will the robot need?
ARI will not need any training. After the first ‘discovery’ mapping, the artificial intelligence software will adapt to the environment and provide more optimised results in the ever evolving and changing ground and space structures.
When ARI is first brought into place, it will make a discovery run and make a rough map. On this map, the user can perform operations such as partitioning, sorting, prohibited areas and lines, different maintenance operations, defining different floors and maps. All of these operations are dynamic and can be changed or added later. ARI can map an area of 100 thousand square metres at a time.
How will autonomous robots cooperate with human workers?
We are seeing a smooth transition of tedious and problematic floor maintenance tasks to robots in all the plants we install and operate. ARI will perform difficult and tedious tasks, while its colleagues will continue to perform more subtle and demanding tasks throughout the facility. The low efficiency and care due to fatigue, boredom and distractions caused by external factors, which are encountered in cleaning large floors, are not seen in robots. Therefore, it is recommended to shift the existing personnel to more ‘human-specific’ tasks that can be performed with more care and attention. Facility management can assign some colleagues to manually operate and program ARI when necessary.
Do your robots require my staff to have advanced technical skills?
No, ARI commercial floor maintenance robots are designed to be user-friendly and do not require staff to have advanced technical skills. Our robots typically come with intuitive interfaces and easy-to-follow instructions, allowing personnel with basic technical knowledge to operate them effectively. Our robots autonomously map, detect and recognize obstacles, and organize orientation and maintenance tasks themselves. Existing staff will only provide optional guidance, organize the areas to be maintained and check the results.
Where can I follow the robotic cleaning performance?
ARI comes with a specially designed user interface that allows the user to supervise every movement of the robot during the maintenance process. You can follow a route, specify no-go lines and areas, assign names or generate automatic reports that will be sent to you after the operation is finished. These reports can be standard or customized. You can examine data such as the amount of water and detergent used, energy consumed, cleaned and waiting areas, unit square meters and time details, etc. on the reports.
Do robots malfunction more than the manual machines we use now?
On the contrary, they break down much less because there are no humans involved. Since robots are designed and programmed in such a way that they do not harm themselves and stay away from potential problems, they are less likely to fail due to working conditions. Since our ARI robots are fully autonomous and free from human error in use, their MTBF (mean time before failure) threshold is very high. A robot checks and monitors its own health as well as environmental working conditions, so that no movement damages its mechanics.
What maintenance do these robots require?
ARA Robotik uses mechanical and electronic components of the highest possible quality in all of its robots, which results in a very long service life. If a honeycomb wall unit is also used with ARI, there is no need for frequent service and maintenance under normal operating conditions. There is no additional routine maintenance as the Honeycomb will keep your robot optimally charged, the water filtered and conditioned, and the brushes and lower body clean.
All technical operations required to keep your robot always optimized and ready for service will be planned according to the Interim Robotic Service details.
How does the RaaS method work? What are the benefits to the customer?
RaaS is a special robots as a service program that allows customers to receive best floor maintenance services without machine ownership. The monthly bills are calculated on actual usage metrics over a fixed base.
What is the estimated lifetime of ARA’s robots?
The expected life of our commercial floor cleaning robots typically ranges from 5 to 8 years. This lifespan can vary based on maintenance as regular maintenance and timely repairs can extend the lifespan and operating environment i.e harsh environments with lots of dust, debris, or harsh chemicals may shorten the robot’s life.
Proper usage and maintenance are key to maximizing the lifespan of these robots. Regularly replacing consumable parts, keeping the robot clean, and following the manufacturer’s guidelines for use can all help in achieving the upper end of the expected lifespan.
This longevity is due to the fact that ARI robots are designed and built to work without harming themselves.
How do I decide what accessories we need for our facility?
This decision depends on the type of floor and your specific needs. If you have carpeted floors, you will need a basic brush and vacuum set. If you have hard floors you will need a floor scrubbing unit and associated tanks, you can
buy 500 mm cylindrical brush or 660 mm twin disc modules and clean water and gray water tanks.
With ARI’s patented modular system, there are many different units that you can change without tools. Floor mopping, floor disinfection, disinfection with UVC (lamp) or ULV (fogging), floor scanning and problem inspection etc. modules can be purchased and used on demand.
How do I change/replace the modules? What tools are required?
No tools are needed to replace any module in ARI. This is a patented system of Ara Robotics and all modules and tanks can be replaced without any tools. Both the cleaning modules and the related tanks can be removed and installed very easily and within minutes. Your robot will automatically recognize the newly installed module and switch to the appropriate program.
What are the physical conditions required for installation? What kind of preparation do we need to do?
Flat ground: ARI can work efficiently on slopes of up to 4%. It can traverse short ramps as long as the installed module allows.
Mains: 220V AC for charging and transferring information.
Water and drainage: Clean mains water to be used in washing and water drain to send the dirty water into the sewer (preferred to be on the floor level)
Internet connection: It is necessary for monitoring all movements of our robot when necessary, remote control, transfer of maps and reports to the user.
Static installation location: The area where the wall unit where the robot will be placed for charging and discharging will be installed and stored when not in use. The first movement area required for the robot to get back is 300x200cm.
How do we upload the map of our facility? If there is a change later, how will it be fixed?
When using ARI Robot, unlike many other cleaning robots, it does not need to load any map. To introduce a new place to your robot, it is enough to place it in a corner and give the ‘recognise’ command. ARI will walk around the entire space and extract the necessary base map.
All physical changes in the working environment are automatically updated when the robot encounters them.
In some places there are steps, pots and flowerpots. Will these pose a danger to the robot?
No, ARI robot is equipped with very advanced sensors that detect obstacles both at ground level and up to its own height and send signals to avoid them. Our floor sensors detect floors lower than 20mm and stop the robot or suggest a new route with avoidance. Our obstacle recognition sensors or cameras according to the robot configuration detect obstacles in the robot’s path and enable decision making with artificial intelligence. In any case, our robot does not hit these obstacles, but avoids them.
How much storage space will the robot need?
Our robots can be stored in two different ways:
For wet use, i.e. floor washing or mopping, we can offer manual or autonomous wall units.
- If you prefer manual filling and drainage, only the charging unit is sufficient. For the charging unit, a volume of 30x50x30cm (DxWxH) is sufficient, provided that it is against the wall.
- If you prefer fully autonomous use, a volume of 40x100x120cm (DxWxH) will be sufficient for the Petek (honeycomb) cradle unit. Water supply, drainage and 220V mains connections are also required.
- Our ARI robot has dimensions of 90x80x75cm (DxWxH).
- When ARI and Petek work together, when your robot is in the cradle, the required volume is 130x100x120cm (DxWxH). After ARI leaves the cradle, the Petek unit will close its platform and return to the storage volume.
For dry use, i.e. floor sweeping or carpet cleaning, only the manual unit is available. A volume of 30x50x30cm (DxWxH) is sufficient for the manual charging unit, provided that it is against the wall.
Does ARI support manual operation?
Absolutely. In autonomous mode, ARI can navigate and clean your facility without any human intervention, but it also offers a manual cleaning mode.
Manual cleaning settings allow ARI to easily adjust and monitor water flow, brush pressure and vacuum power, as well as manual navigation.
ARI is also equipped with a follow me function, which allows the user to move the ARI to a desired location on their own and perform a special procedure such as spot cleaning.
Mapping and Navigation FAQ
Our AI software powers ARI, enabling the fully autonomous floor scrubbing robot to understand the working environment and operate in a way that maximises cleaning and maintenance performance while minimising human intervention. The Ara Robotic AI Platform is far superior to its competitors in ARI’s true autonomous cleaning and disinfection efficiency. ARI can autonomously map multiple floors over 100000 m2, marking obstacles, lifts, doors, different sections and even escalators on this map.
How does ARI automatically navigate around commercial premises?
When ARI is deployed to a new facility, the entire area is mapped and a fully customisable cleaning plan is created. From this point on, using the onboard sensor suite, at the start of each cleaning session, the Ara Robotic AI Platform compares how the area looks this time with the original cleaning plan. The system then determines the best way to maximise cleaning and maintenance efficiency and coverage. Essentially, ARI first recognises the environment it is in and then determines the best route in real time.
Ara Robotics’ advanced localisation algorithms, designed on the experience of thousands of working hours, allow continuous operation even in the most dynamic and challenging environments where off-the-shelf SLAM (simultaneous localisation and mapping) algorithms used by many robotics companies fail. Ara Robotics’ proprietary algorithms ensure fewer stops and more consistent cleaning. By interpreting long-range lidar sensor data and leveraging large and detailed cleaning maps, the AI software provides location-level awareness to understand their position relative to items in their immediate vicinity and in a broader context, such as where they are in a large facility.
The AI Platform means that ARI is unique in its ability to avoid obstacles by avoiding anyone or anything. Using a variety of sensors, it continuously evaluates the data collected to ensure that ARI can avoid anyone or anything and stop when unexpected obstacles appear. Unlike other semi-autonomous machines that become confused and often stop when multiple obstacles get in its way, the Ara Robotics algorithm enables ARI to navigate dynamic environments with ease. ARI is the best at keeping the operational environment safe.
An industry-leading suite of lidar (light detection and ranging), camera and 3D sensors provides the software algorithm with a continuous stream of information and data that is analysed to make informed decisions. As well as providing this data to the Artificial Intelligence Platform, the sensors share it with our team who use it to work directly with our customers and optimise cleaning operations to provide the best possible floor care.
Can ARI detect obstacles and prevent collisions?
That’s right! ARI is equipped with an advanced array of sensors that allow the robot to identify any person or anything in its path and safely navigate your facility.
In autonomous clearing mode, ARI will detect obstacles in its path and, if possible, go around obstacles up to 2 metres away. If an obstacle is too large to go around or comes closer than 2 metres to the front of the robot, ARI will slow down to a stop and plan a new path around the object. When the path is suitable (either because the obstacle has moved or a new path has been created), ARI will automatically resume operation (these parameters may vary depending on the application and/or environment).
How are ARI’s mapping capabilities different to other cleaning robots?
Cleaning robots can typically be grouped into two categories, semi-autonomous or fully autonomous.
Semi-autonomous robots often rely on the teach-and-repeat planning method, only knowing the routes an operator has taught them. This means they are prone to stoppages when environments change (e.g. holiday display set up or seating area moved). Once stuck, the operator has to rescue the floor scrubber and re-teach it to the new environment/layout. This is a time-consuming task that results in non-productive downtime. Imagine having to do this each time the environment changes. This method of operation is less than ideal for commercial spaces as the majority of commercial environments are dynamic. If the robot is getting stuck as items within the environment change/move, the robot will not deliver the value-add it’s supposed to.
ARI is a fully autonomous floor maintenance robot. Our proprietary AI software enables ARI to understand its operating environment and take action to maximize cleaning productivity while minimizing human intervention. ARI outshines the rest in true autonomous cleaning and disinfection. The platform leverages data from a variety of sensors and provides situational awareness, enables advanced decision-making capabilities and reliably completes its two key objectives: determine the robot’s position within space and decide on escape maneuvers. ARI algorithm is so clever that it delivers full autonomy, very rarely getting lost, stuck, or needing to be rescued by a local operator. As a result, it reduces reliance on local operators when compared with other methods of operation such as teach-and-repeat.
How are ARI’s cleaning plans created?
ARI uses the SLAM algorithm to create and process its maps. Leading-edge technology and human expertise combine to ensure the creation of effective and efficient cleaning plans, with safety and productivity as top priorities.
ARI is equipped with an array of sensors, including front and rear lidar sensors and 3D cameras. Those sensors, in combination with the Ara Robotics developed software and web services allow the creation of bespoke cleaning plans of each location during initial deployment.
That plan is then transmitted to Ara Robotics, if required, who check and analyze the layout in detail to ensure all fixed obstacles and potential hazards (such as walls, pillars, steps and so on) have been correctly identified as “no-go zones, no-go lines, special assistance areas, double and triple cleaning areas, zigzag zones” etc.
Local facility managers will then define the optimal cleaning route for each area of their premises.
Over the first few weeks of deployment, the Ara Robotics Customer Satisfaction team reviews cleaning operations and productivity metrics to look for opportunities to further optimize performance.
Can cleaning plans be updated if my floor layout changes?
Absolutely and automatically. As the ARI algorithm is completely autonomous and dynamic, any changes in the layout of the facility will be immediately recorded and amended in the present maps. Additionally, ARI supports Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G LTE networking which allows users to sync manual cleaning plan changes whenever required. Also ARI uses a proprietary LoRa network system which allows seamless communication between robot and Petek cradle in heavily crowded indoors.
